Original Spice Girl
Introducing "Original Spice Girl," a bold and deeply personal capsule collection by emerging fashion designer Krishma Sabbarwal. Created during the lockdown in 2020, this project is a testament to resourcefulness and creative resilience. Premiering at MBFWRussia 2020 Global Talents Digital, the collection draws inspiration from Sabbarwal’s lived experiences as a brown-skinned South Asian woman, transforming cultural memory into wearable storytelling. It stands as a powerful call to celebrate local talent, heritage, and unapologetic self-expression.
Original Spice Girl is a playful yet poignant reclamation of identity, an ode to the marks of home that never quite washed out. The turmeric stains, the scent of spice woven into fabric, the teasing that became second nature—this collection turns those childhood insecurities into something beautiful. Crafted using natural dyes like turmeric and rust, with the latter sourced from my dad's forgotten tools in the shed, a quiet nod to her family’s background in metal forging, each piece carries the weight of history, resilience, and reinvention. A nod to the pop group, yes, but more importantly, a reminder that we are, and always have been, the original spice girls.
